In Luke Aylen's The Mirror and the Mountain, two 11-year-olds pass through a mirror and end up in a magical kingdom called Presadia. Once there, Jonah and Summer find themselves on a strange quest to find the banished king, encountering dwarves, elves and a dragon along the way.

They and their new friends face big decisions and hardship as they search for the lost king. Bravery is required to reach their goal, and they must also address common struggles such as pride, judging others, fear, telling the truth, sacrifice, and taming the tongue. Thanks to the sacrificial efforts of the High Lord of the dwarves, the queen of the elves, and the fire-breathing dragon, Jonah and Summer succeed in finding the king, who provides a clear representation of Jesus.

He laments the fact that those living in Presadia have turned their backs on him, but gives the children hope that he is always watching over his people, ready to restore them.

The children discover shards of the mirror on the mountain where they find the king, and use them as a portal to get back to the real world. The book ends with a series of questions for children and families to address, so that the book's powerful themes can be analysed and absorbed.
