"Any man's death diminishes me," wrote John Donne, "because I am involved in Mankind." Yet he was also able to write: "Death be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful... for thou art not so... Those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow, die not... " Donne was Dean of St Paul's in the days of Charles I, but the Christian truths he preached there over 300 years ago are timeless. The paradox of death incorporates tragedy and triumph; sadness and victory; an ending and a beginning. Life on earth is diminished each time a good person dies, and such a death affects us all. But Donne was right to balance that thought by proclaiming that death is not the end: we go on with Christ. We leave this world in order to enter God's Joy. Those we have loved and lost here will be waiting for us there, safe and happy in God's Hands. This book is concerned with that essential and eternal truth.
